Days like yesterday are sad, and sometimes it’s hard to think about the good in humanity. But there is so, so much good, and I’m remembering that today.
Some of the most energizing and uplifting experiences I’ve ever been a part of was volunteering abroad, both in Nicaragua and Tanzania, but today I’ll focus on Tanzania.
As I’ve blogged about before, the Husband and I spent a week of our honeymoon volunteering there, and it was easily one of the most rewarding weeks of my life. The students we had the privilege to teach were gracious, positive, thankful for the very small things, fun, optimistic, and energized. And it’s these feelings that I like to dwell upon in times like these, instead of the sadness and confusion that can overtake us during days like yesterday.
So today, through pictures, I’m remembering the goodness in life and especially what I’m grateful for in my own life. Because life is good, people (especially children) are inspiring, and I choose to be optimistic about the future in front of us all. It’s easy to say that this world is ugly, but in looking at the faces of children – it’s easier to remember how beautiful life is, too. This earth is filled with amazing people, both in my own country and halfway around the globe, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to more fully engage with others during this trip at the end of 2012.
My prayers go out to all of those affected by yesterday’s events, and especially members of my family who were at the race.
