Our trip to San Diego was supposed to be from Thursday to Monday morning. However, just as I was bemoaning the fact that our vacation was ending, God smiled on us and our flight was delayed and subsequently cancelled. Then (after a bunch of aggravating calls), we couldn’t get rebooked on a flight back to Chicago until Wednesday.
That meant 2 more glorious days in San Diego.
This was not my first time in San Diego, but it was the first time Tim had been there, and we took full advantage.
Some highlights included:
- Walking around the Gaslamp District and Little Italy and along the water near the marina.
- Staying at two awesome hotels with views of the bay.
- Taking the ferry over to Coronado and exploring the island. (It was Clara’s first boat ride!)
- Strolling through Balboa Park and seeing the flowers (especially the roses) in bloom.
- Hiking at Torrey Pines and dipping our feet in the ocean. (If you go to San Diego – you must make a trip to Torrey Pines!)
- Driving to Del Mar and La Jolla to see different parts of the coast. The best food in San Diego, in my opinion, isn’t found downtown.
- Watching Clara crawl around in the grass – she had never been in grass before! And also swing – she absolutely adores swinging and she swings with her mouth wide open and we have no idea why but it’s adorable.
- Eating Acai bowls every day for breakfast. Seriously, every single day we started our morning with a walk to a local coffee shop and I ordered the exact same thing each time: an Acai bowl (coconut) and a Chai tea latte with almond milk.
- Swimming with Clara in the hotel pools. Actually, if we’re telling the truth here, I did not swim with her – Tim did. I’m too much of a wuss in 70 degree weather… it needs to be at least 85 degrees for me to get in a pool! But, I did take pictures so my role was still important, right?!
Of course, the absolute best part of the trip (well, aside from the perfect weather) was spending time together as a little family. Even though we were actually in San Diego for Tim’s job, when he wasn’t working we had time together as a family and it was lovely. That’s why the two extra days were so special, because they afforded us the opportunity to actually vacation together!
