What I read from around the web. (+ Giveaway!)

(Because Ozzie doesn’t feel like he gets enough attention on the blog anymore, I’m throwing this picture of him up. He does still exist, see?!)

“There is another Accounting phrase called the ‘sunk cost trap.’ Essentially, it warns against the tendency of people to irrationally follow through on an activity that is not meeting their expectations simply because of the time and/or money they have already spent on it. If a purchase made in the past is not providing its desired result, it is sunk. And other than the lessons learned, it should not be factored into future investments.” (here)

“The French enjoy a low incidence of coronary heart disease and an average life expectancy of 82 years, while consuming up to 23.9kg of cheese each year. The British who eat 11.6kg of cheese each year, suffer from twice the levels of cardiovascular disease and their life expectancy is 81 years.” (here)

“People who got up and moved around for at least two minutes every hour had a 33 percent lower risk of dying, according to researchers the University Of Utah School Of Medicine.” (here)

“When the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 26, it caused widespread destruction, killing thousands across the country, including 19 of the roughly 1,000 people stationed at Everest Base Camp. But the number of Everest climbers is only a fraction of the thousands of international tourists who were hiking and backpacking in the country — many who are still unaccounted for. The Red Cross has said that there may be as many as 500 Americans missing.” (here)

“A new study looks specifically at how formal attire changes people’s thought processes. “Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world,” says Abraham Rutchick, an author of the study and a professor of psychology at California State University, Northridge. Rutchick and his co-authors found that wearing clothing that’s more formal than usual makes people think more broadly and holistically, rather than narrowly and about fine-grained details. In psychological parlance, wearing a suit encourages people to use abstract processing more readily than concrete processing.” (here)
