It’s official, we’re back from vacation. Per usual, it went by too quickly and was too short. Wah, wah.
For those of you who may not know, the Husband and I (along with our two good friends) spent the last nine days touring and hanging out in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and a little bit in Uruguay.
It was quite the adventure, I assure you!
I won’t bother with an entire vacation recap, but I will tell you about some of the highlights of the trip:
- Handmade leather shoes. They are beautiful! Of course I feel in love with a pair and they didn’t have my size and I’m still traumatized over the entire experience. Seriously, who makes only one pair of shoes per size?!
- Shopping in Palermo, which is also the neighborhood we called home for the week.
- Riding in a golf cart in Uruguay to see the beaches near Colonia.
- The food. More specifically: Alfajores, pasta, lemonade with mint, gelato, a delicious mocha, anything dulce de leche, red wine… We even found delicious pizza and Thai food (rare in Buenos Aires since they don’t exactly appreciate spices in their food). Thankfully we spent much of our days walking, so I only gained 2 lbs over the week we were gone.
- Closed door dinners. These types of dinners are really popular in Buenos Aires, and they’re basically mini-restaurants in someone’s house. Luckily, our friends had done their research so they made a dinner reservation ahead of time, and then we showed up at someone’s house, and they had tables set up and a prix fixe menu arranged with wine pairings… and then we sat down and ate the most delicious food ever! It’s pretty much like a fancy dinner party where no one knows each other (including the hosts.) The two dinners we went to had a ton of expats / tourists so that was nice.
- Our guided bike tour through San Telmo and La Boca, where we looked at brightly colored houses and murals. I just love bike riding along urban streets – it made me feel right at home.
- Seeing the Plaza de Mayo, which is where most of the political rallies have taken (and still take) place.
- The challenge of speaking Spanish and being able to actually get my point across! It’s the small victories.
- The beautiful old theater that is now a bookstore. GORGEOUS.
- Spending time in the Recoleta Cemetery where the rich and famous families of Buenos Aires were/are buried. I could totally walk around normal cemeteries for hours, and the excitement of seeing this particular one was almost too much for me to handle. It’s basically a city of dead people, with structures for each prominent family buried there.
- The parks. There is actually quite a bit of green space in Buenos Aires and it’s beautiful! I loved seeing all the lovers and families hanging out and enjoying the sunshine.
- Touring one of the most famous Opera houses in the world (Teatro Colón).
This vacation was extra-lovely because we were able to stay at our friends’ (rented) apartment and spend tons of quality time with them! We enjoyed shopping, eating, playing cards, walking around, playing with their dog, and watching (late night) episodes of Breaking Bad together.
It was a truly wonderful time and a trip that I’ll remember forever.
I can’t wait to go back to South America – it definitely exceeded expectations!
Where are you headed on your next vacation!?
Cheers!
