If there’s one thing that I hope Clara inherits from me, it’s my love of reading.
And my eye color (blue).
And my hair color/texture.
Possibly my dry sense of humor…
But really, a love of reading would be the absolute best.
When I was younger, I would beg my mom to read me “just one more book!” before bed. And I was talking about chapter books. My poor, poor mother. But, then when I learned how to read by myself, I was the most self-entertained little one in the world! I would literally walk through malls with my nose in a book. I brought books on every car ride, to every restaurant, to all errands we ever went on… I loved them.
To this day, there is not much that makes me happier than a great book.
(And I’m a complete and total extrovert!)
The last book Clara and I read together was too good for me not to share with all of you.
It’s titled ‘A Love Letter From God’ (written by P.K. Hallinan and illustrated by Laura Watson) and it is so precious that my heart hurts just thinking about it.
This is a picture book with beautiful illustrations, but even more beautiful words. In this story, the author supposes what God might say in a personal letter written to a child.
The very first pages exclaim “I love you, My child! What more can I say? To Me, you are perfect in every way!”
How awesome is that?!
And it keeps getting better from there.
‘A Love Letter From God’ illustrates that God will always provide for His children and how he does that, through guidance, companionship, provisions, and nature. It reinforces that God is always there, even in times of trouble, and how he uses even the difficult times for good. However, this is all explained in simple statements that children will be able to understand.
I love the lyrical words. I love the pictures. I love the message. I love the cut-outs. I love that the pages are sturdy and can withstand Clara being a bit ‘rough’ with them. And I especially love reading this book to Clara is because its words are a nice reminder for me, too!
A difficult aspect of being a parent is just how I’m going to explain God to Clara when she’s very little. I want her to always know God and to never doubt His love for her, but sometimes that’s hard for me to comprehend myself, and I feel horribly ill-equipped to explain it to an infant/toddler. However, books like this make my job just a little easier. I know it’s a book that Clara will love reading (and I will love reading to her) and I know it is much more effective (and fun!) than I could ever be in simply explaining such a huge concept – God’s unconditional love for His children.
I really can’t do this book justice in a review, but I highly recommend you check this book out for yourself so you can see what I mean. It’s seriously so sweet.
